Research

Evidence for the children the instruments forgot.

CCAN develops culturally-valid assessment methods and the evidence behind them, so that neurodevelopmental understanding is accurate, fair, and usable in real-world settings.

Focus areas

Where we concentrate.

Culturally-valid instruments

Designing and validating assessment tools normed for multilingual, low-resource, and high-adversity populations.

Neurodevelopment in context

The impact of malaria, perinatal HIV, sickle-cell, malnutrition, and adversity on the developing brain.

Strengths-based profiling

Methods that capture capability and support need together, guiding intervention without requiring a diagnostic label.

Instruments

The AFRICNA & GLOCNA framework.

Protocol · 0–18

Multi-informant assessment across 12 domains

A modular framework across five developmental age bands, integrating caregiver, teacher, child, and clinician report with direct tasks and structured observation.

Method

Context risk & protection profiling

Social determinants, adverse experiences, and protective factors scored as active variables that shape every profile.

Output

Functional intervention profiles

Eight profile-based intervention plans across three delivery tiers, with built-in referral-urgency triage for low-specialist settings.
